Solving for show-verload
Stan (concept project)
1 week

Competitor analysis, surveys, user interviews, AB testing and prototyping
Summary
Stan is an Australian subscription video streaming service (SVOD). For this project I hypothesised that deciding what to watch on a SVOD is a widespread problem. As a solution I designed a feature on Stan that helps viewers decide what they want to watch.
This is a concept project I completed in one week during my time at General Assembly. Due to the tight deadline, I approached this a design challenge – jumping into research and design simultaneously.

THE PROBLEM
Viewers spend too long deciding what to watch because of 'show-verload'
I hypothesised that viewers are victims of show-verload. This was proven to be a real problem after a few interviews and a survey.
7 usability test sessions
Note: User interviews were previously conducted by another agency. We combed through the interview notes to generate digestioble insights.
Key insights
-
Overall usability issues of the platform, particularly with account creation process and the collaboration stage of the Challenge.
-
Curators complete their tasks during the final day or two before their deadline and that the quality of their discussion or submission is less than ideal.
-
Users don't feel they are valued for their input throughout Challenges. What's in it for users?

– Research: Console Dashboard
Conducted some research including user testing and desktop research to rethink the event host dashboard.
A/B TESTING
6 one-on-one interviews
Key insights
-
5 out of 6 users preferred Option A as it focuses more on important ticket sales information and less marketing content.
-
All users questioned the CTA microcopy and wanted the copy to be clearer.
-
All users said they would like useful resources to help them increase ticket sales
Option A

Option B

Option C

Google analytics
Key insights
-
70% are desktop users, 29% are mobile and 1% are tablet
-
Dashboard accounts for 37% of total page views on the platform
-
Average time on page – 9:16 mins. That's a long time!

Rebranding
I helped evolved Humanitix's UI to be more human and modern. The design process I followed for the redesign was more design focussed and less user research focused. This was because the business wanted to launch the rebrand ASAP.

What were the challenges of the project?
01
Showcasing the value of UX research
Prior to me jumping onto this project, UX research including user testing was not part of Humanitix's product development strategy. Design heavily focused on churning out UI designs as fast as possible without time for thorough UX research.
02
Divided dev and design relationship
As UX design and research was not of high value for the business, the dev and design relationship was quite silhoed and communication was limited. This resulted in inconsistencies between designs and production.
03
Fast-pace startup with lean deadlines
As Humanitix is still a growing startup, design deadlines were very tight. This contributed to the business not understanding or seeing the value in UX research.
💡 How did I tackle these challenges?
Throughout my engagement I implemented the following ways of working and processes to showcase the value of UX and unite devs and designers:
-
Routine desk checks with devs for every design (Scrum framework)
-
Kanban board
-
Open and frequent communication with devs including ad-hoc calls via Slack
-
Tested my designs whenever possible as seen with the console dashboard redesign
-
Got feedback on designs from the internal PALO design team
